date night + updates

I can't believe it's already MAY! I seemed to have taken a slight hiatus for a moment there and I apologize. So much has happened in April and I let time get the best of me! The good news? I'm willing to make up for it ;)

After finally powering down from what seemed like a month-long celebration...because let's be serious, it totally was... Matthew and I were still able to squeeze in a casual, yet lovely date night last night! He has been raving about this BBQ place FOREVER and the few times he tried to take me, they were closed…the restaurants here on island have random hours of operation! Anyway, we saw the light on from our apartment and trucked it across the street.

The restaurant is very small, only holding a few tables and their version of "bar seating". And per usual, I'm not exactly sure of the name, but how amazing is this menu? It's hand-carved and another example of how detail-oriented the Japanese are. Since the menu was more of an art piece, I relied on Matthew to order since he was a regular.

Okra was up first, along with our frosty mugs of beer! The okra was delicious and reminded me of home. I'm pretty sure I only knew the vietnamese translation until I went to Russo's one day when I was maybe 12 or 13…maybe even pushing it to high school. Anyway, all of my hometown loves will know what I'm talking about :)

Waiting for the next dish to come out. Don't mess with a hungry Jen :)

Chicken was up next and then the famous CHEESY POTATOES. Matthew has been saying so many good things about this dish and let me tell you, it did NOT disappoint. It was garlicky, cheesy and perfect. I wanted to order another one, but ended our dinner with their special instead:

This was like chicken nuggets AMPED UP. Fried pieces of tender chicken with cheese, wasabi and an egg on top…UM WHAT? So good, yet so simple, kind of? Sorry to all my vegan friends out there!

How funny is this? It's a drunk meter so to speak! This sign basically explains how drunk you get with each type of beverage. Awamori is a very popular alcoholic beverage made out of rice and it is deadly! Drink with caution because it literally tastes like water since mixing it with water is the most common way to drink it. 100ml of that will get you as drunk as 500ml of beer. Crazy, yet refreshing all rolled into one.

Oops, did I say we ended dinner with fried chicken? What I really meant to say was ICE CREAM. A scoop of benimo and a scoop of coconut, please and thank you! Date night was a success in case you  were all wondering :)

So for those of you who don't know, Matthew and I will be stationed in Tampa, FL starting this summer and we could not be more thrilled! However, this also means our time in Japan is quickly coming to a end…at least for now. My time here in Okinawa was short-lived, but hands down one of the most amazing places I have ever visited and I plan on coming back…mark my words! But with that said, I am SUPER excited to start this new journey in Tampa with my husband and blog in a city we'll call home for the next three years :)

Up next… Matthew and I have some exciting news to share! And no it's not a baby…wedding first, people!
